House Grounding / Fuse Box Upgrade?
Scott Peterkin

Note: Please excuse the term "fuse box" - this should have been "breaker box"

After a visit from the cable company I was told that the house grounding wires inside and outside the house were no longer code compliant. From the fuse box, a copper cable has been connected to copper pipe suppling cold water located a few feet away. This now had to be corrected to a much longer copper line connected to the water intake pipe where water is brought into the house from the street. Additionally I would need to add outside ground rods which the internet cable from the street would be connected to.

I had the electrical work done by a licensed electrician who backed up the recommendations of the cable company (imagine that - good advice from the cable company!). Before he left I asked what other corrections should be made in my electrical system. The answer was less expensive but still somewhat alarming. My Square Q whole house surge protector, installed eighteen years ago, had been installed incorrectly. And, my fusebox would have to be replaced when I finished my basement and needed additional outlets.

Some years ago I started reading about audiophiles who installed dedicated electrical lines to use with their audio equipment. I did this in my house but then decided to use an upstairs room for audio - away from my new lines. While I used it, that change made a considerable improvement in my sound stage. The electrical line running to my upstairs room is much harder to access so I have held off make that change.

Still, an upgrade to the basement fuse box which would include correcting the whole house surge protector faulty installation now sounds like something I should consider. Does anyone have any recommendations for an "audio friendly" fuse box (aka circuit breaker panel) for my basement?

More thoughts on this subject -

I've removed the first paragraph which talked about the effects of a prior lightning strike. I found it lacking information (from me) and really off the topic of how to improve grounding.

Now that my house grounding is to code and the cable line to the street is finally also grounded to code I feel confident that my equipment is protected as well as I can make it from the next surge.

The second link (from VH Audio) has a range of products for improving electrical power for audio. I will post any other vendor I run across with similar products. If anyone has been down this path of cleaning up electrical power please do add your comments.
