Here's a rundown of my media storage:

Picture#1: Ikea Ivar Wooden Shelves with 5 bamboo Stacking Drawer Organizer from The Container Store

Picture#2: Ikea CD Bookcase

Picture#3: Bookcase with Vinyl Vertical Supports

Picture#4: Nimby - CD Auto Loader

I thought to start this topic because the bamboo organizers are on sale this holday weekend. They are a perfect size to hold CDs - either in the case or in any plastic holder when exactly the same size. My plastic holders are JEWELSLEEVES which are sadly not currently available. Be aware that humidity and plastic sleeves are not a combination that works with the extreme result causing the plastic sleeve to stick to the CD.

The Ikea CD Bookcase may also be unavailable. I haven't tried to buy any recently and have also been unable to find them in the store. I purchased most of mine from Craigs List - and that's why they don't match.

The Vinyl bookcase was purchased from a store in the shadow of LaGuardia Airport in NYC. I purchased one or two (depending what would fit in the car) for a few years when I passed through the area. Can't recall the name off hand. I believe the shipping cost of this item would probably dissuade anyone from not doing the same.

Finally the machine on the coffee table is called the NIMBY - and I include it in this conversation on media storage because it is the ultimate way to deal with a very large CD/DVD collection - rip them for use with a music server - in my case that would be the Beatis. I have been in a challenging storage situation for years - the end result has been just not listening to large portions of my collection (6k+). The music server has been something I have save up for years to purchase. The wait was worth it.

In order to keep my options open for large collection storage of CDs, I recently purchased some nearly new Case Logic 300+ capacity CD binders from a local seller (see pics). I was able to get 8 binders for $75 total. I am starting the process by moving a collection of several hundred CD-R Jazz discs into the binders, as many of those flimsy cases were broken in shipping from Florida. I paid nothing for these as I was purchasing another 800+ Jazz CDs from the seller and she sent them to me as a bonus. They just have computer printed index cards with the songs on each, so they easily slide into the binder.

Speaking with member Robbie Hewitt, he advised me against putting my real collection into these binders. I DO like keeping all of the inserts and booklets along with track lisitngs, etc. The binders may not make this an easy task.I thought I might index the CD binders and then seperately file any extra paperwork - inserts or booklets that don't work in the binder. I could file these safely in a regular file cabinet with tabs or something like that. Not ideal, but certainly less space needed than 30 square feet of floor space. :)

I also recently looked at some used Steelcase drawer cabinets on FB marketplace. These would hold all of my collection in their jewel cases, but the size was wasteful and would it be un-wieldy for me to manage pickup and installation of 6 steel cabinets wth 6 drawers each. I figured I could put 3700 CDs into these cabinets and they were only $175.

I currently have CDs on 4 racks, in 3 drawers, and 4 or 5 plastic storage containers. I would desperately like to consolidate and organize them so I can actually find a particular piece of music in my collection. Any thoughts on the use of Case Logic brand binders and their potential for damaging my collection before I jump in with both feet and get rid of thousands of jewel cases ?

THANKS!

Scott, as I also have a larger CD collection (3500+) I am interested in improving my CD storage system. I appreciate you sharing details about what you are using, but would love to see a photo of the bamboo stackable cases on the IKEA IVAR shelving if possible. Thanks!

For CD storage I lost most of my jewel cases and put them in poly sleeves from these guys.

They are now stored in these bamboo boxes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09VY7G1XC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I angled the front of the boxes for easier access. This setup saves a load of space.

How do you store your music?

For CDs use IVAR shelving from IKEA and Bamboo Stacking Drawer Organizers (15 x 6) - here's a link..

For LPs my collection is stored in bookshelves made for Vinyl storage.
